Like yin and yang, there are opposing muscle pairs in the body that perform opposite actions.
-
Normally the muscles in each pair individually activate just the right amount to produce a smooth and controlled movement, or to keep the joint still.
-
Watch what happens when you try to move the foot up and down with a surgically repaired Achilles tendon. The ankle plantarflexors (that point the foot down) have a difficult time balancing the dorsiflexors (that point the foot up). The result is an extremely jerky movement!

The same problem can be present, usually to a lesser extent, when there are under or overactive muscles from old injuries, compensatory movement patterns, and poor posture.
